The pretended ASR game – Dan Player Review

Today i share a very detailed and interesting game review.
SimeonG (HelloQtion on KGS / about 1 ~ 3 dan / twitter: @iGoPau ) from the Go club in france: Club de Go de Pau was following my study journal twitter account and was offering to review this game, for free.  The review is very high quality and i`m sure if you are a single or double kyu player you can get something out of this!

SimeonG was asking for feedback as how his review style is good or whar can be inproved. So please, if you have some time, leave a feedback in the comment section and/or write to him at twitter.

By the way: I thought it was a ASR league game, but actually i think my opponent just joined the game without knowing 😀 I did not find her or his name at the Delta 1 ASR league page, i think she is not playing the ASR league.
Anyway it was a fun game. As a ASR game it would count as a loss for me, because ASR games have to be played even. But normally, like you maybe know, when 5 kyu plays against 4 kyu, the 5 kyu get`s black and there is no komi. So i made a mistake while setting up this game as a ASR game… anyway… here is the review. Enjoy!

    I think this review is overdetailed. Not bad thing just… unfocused? I prefer to find and highlight just 2-3 main features instead of getting (or giving) a lot information about everything. In kyu-games most important thing is fundamentals. For example, in this game black played a lot of low moves (second line slides, invades and connections). Bad habbit? Same with direction of development (r6, d5, c8…) and balance (c3, n19…). More details — harder for receiver to concentrate on really important aspects

      When the reviews get extremely broad and focused on 2-3 features (without many comments in the regular moves), I find that the SGF reader is actually counter-productive. If anything, since most people reading aren’t going to spend time going through move by move to figure things out and wait for commentary to show up, perhaps this style of review is more suited to diagrams to highlight those 2-3 points. „Here we can see Black has thickness in the upper right. White’s approach here at X is the wrong direction.“ Otherwise, it’s like a big waiting game as you progress through the SGF viewer. Just my two cents.

      PS. I think I may have misinterpreted your comment initially. I think my thoughts were more along the lines of people who give sparse comments. But I think your point was to have the review just themed around 2-3 concepts while being thorough in the review. If so, I can totally see the merits of that. Another approach though could be to have a 1-3 point lesson at the end of the commentary to highlight what the 3 main problems were and then point out which moves players can look at to reference those lessons.

    So, i just took some time to read your review again. I really got a lot out of it! Thank you for that. I do like reviews with lots of variations and for me , there is no way a review can be „too detailed“ , but maybe that is a question of taste.
    I think 2 main points are still in my mind: 1. slow moves to make 2 eyes instead of jumping out lightly is bad! 2. avoiding „strange overplays“
    I can’t really find anything bad about the review… i think you have 1 or 2 misspellings/ typos… once you say „I would have played this way as Black but that looks nice anyway.“ I think you mean „wouldn’t“ … but this things are happeening 🙂 nice review, thnx again!

    For me personally, my #1 piece of advice would be to explain the reason behind your statements. For example, „This is a mistake.“ Does not really tell me anything except that it’s for wrong for some reason that I will most likely not be able to figure out myself.
